This Friday and Saturday night at the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill, another local feature will have its world premiere. Tim McClelland’s sci-fi/horror/drama Fugue State has been in production/post-production for a couple of years now, but it joins a whole host of low-budget feature-length films screened at the Guild in the last 12 months. It’s been a productive time for local filmmakers, and it’s great to see another successfully completed project. You can join writer/director McClelland and his cast/crew for screenings at 10 p.m. and midnight both nights. Tickets are a mere $7. Civic Cinema on the Plaza is returning this summer to downtown Albuquerque. On June 20 and 27, July 18 and 25, and Aug. 1, the City of Albuquerque will sponsor free public screenings of classic Hollywood films at Harry E. Kinney Civic Plaza beginning at dusk. Last summer, for example, crowds got to watch Some Like It Hot and To Kill a Mockingbird . This year, Albuquerque residents are invited to vote for the top five films they’d like to see this summer. Choices range from the 1935 Marx Brothers classic A Night at the Opera to Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein to John Ford’s Stagecoach . To vote for your faves, simply log on to www.cabq.gov/civiccinema. You’ve got until April 11 to cast your vote.
Nm Film Overload!
Once again, the State Film Office will sponsor the New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase, a multi-day screening of various and sundry features, shorts, documentaries, animations and what-have-you produced by filmmakers from around our fair state. This is a non-juried, open-sheet screening, but organizers only have room for 30 hours’ worth of programming, so it’s first-come, first-served. The first Showcase screening will take place at Albuquerque’s Guild Cinema in May. After that, the festival will tour several other New Mexico cities over the course of the summer. All screenings will be free to attend, and there is no entry fee for submitting a film or video. DVD, 35mm, 16mm, MiniDV, DVCAM, VHS and SuperVHS are all acceptable formats. The director, producer or screenwriter must be a New Mexico resident and all works must be 120 minutes or less. Films can be mailed to or dropped off at the Guild Cinema, 3405 Central NE, Albuquerque, N.M. 87106 on or before Monday, April 14.
