The deadline for the 2008 Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is Friday, July 18. Films can be of any length as long as they pertain to LGBT issues, and entry is only $15. New country for young men
Local filmmakers Chris Walsh and Matt Garcia embarked into the Mongolian Steppe with a camera in hand. They competed in Mongolian wrestling tournaments, sought Taimen (the world’s biggest breed of salmon) and generally tried to adapt to a strange new culture. The result is their feature-length documentary, Off the Beaten Path , which will screen at the Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE) this weekend and next. Showtimes are as follows: Friday, July 18, 9 p.m.; Saturday, July 19, 1 p.m.; Friday, July 25, 8 p.m.; Saturday, July 26, 1 p.m. Admission is only $5 and goes to supporting local, independent film. It’s also worth noting that the soundtrack to Off the Beaten Path features music by acclaimed Albuquerque band Ya Ya Boom (of which Alibi News Editor Marisa Demarco is the lead singer).
