Albuquerque’s week-long race to shoot, edit and premiere 12-minute screenplays by seven screenwriters from around the country kicks off Friday, July 25. Join screenwriters and volunteers that night at the launch party from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Downtown (in the Atrium). Then, on Wednesday, July 30, buy weary crew members a drink at the wrap party at the same hotel, in the Sendero Room, starting at 7 p.m. For more information, visit dukecityshootout.com. Check back here next week for information on screening times and gala events.

Reel World Dalai Lama Renaissance

Harrison Ford narrates this award-winning, world peace-themed documentary that offers “an intimate look” at the Dalai Lama and other global “thought leaders.” Dalai Lama Renaissance will screen at the Guild (3405 Central NE) from Friday, July 25, through Thursday, July 31. On opening night, Producer/Director Khashyar Darvich will make an appearance and give a Q&A. For showtimes and ticket info, visit guildcinema.com or call 255-1848. Reel World Laramie

Continuing in the theme of special screenings, The Laramie Project (the story of Matthew Shepard, victim of one of the most widely recognized hate crimes in recent U.S. history) will show at the North Fourth Art Center this Monday, July 28, at 6 p.m., hosted by Working Classroom and the New York-based Tectonic Theater Project. One of the writers of the Emmy Award-nominated HBO drama, Leigh Fondakowski, will be on hand for a Q&A. A workshop on “developing innovative works that explore theatrical language and form” may take place the following day (the workshop was tentative when we went to press; call for details). All are welcome to attend. For more information, call Working Classroom at 242-9267.
