The New York Times review of Christopher Paolini’s dragon-loving Eragon perhaps describes it best: "For all its flaws, is an authentic work of great talent." Paolini, for all his nearly 25 years, is an arguably talented fantasy writer whose skills, we can hope, are refined in his upcoming book, Brisingr. The third installment of the Inheritance Cycle—which was originally billed as a trilogy but is now a four-parter—releases on Saturday, Sept. 20, and two Albuquerque Barnes and Noble locations (600 Menaul NE and 3701-A Ellison NW) are celebrating with dragon-related events. Both gatherings start at 10 a.m.After you’ve gotten your fantasy fill, stick around the Coronado Barnes and Noble for a sci-fi fix at 1 p.m. Melinda Snodgrass and Walter Jon Williams, two members of New Mexico’s gaggle of award-winning science fiction authors, will sign their latest works The Edge of Reason and Implied Spaces , respectively. No worries about honed skills here, these two are pro.
The Santa Fe Opera’s 2008 season has closed, but the Metropolitan Opera is just getting started. Given that many—nay, most —of us can’t jet out to New York every weekend to take in the Met, Fathom Events offers a gateway to N.Y.C. on a more reasonable budget. Starting on opening night, Saturday, Sept. 20, Cottonwood’s Starport and Century Downtown 14 present live HD screenings of the Metropolitan Opera performances throughout the season until May of 2009. Make that the biggest-little stage in town. Our very own Albuquerque Little Theatre in its very own 78 th season is hosting auditions for Miracle on 34 th Street by Valentine Davies. The play will be ALT’s last of the year and aims to find a huge cast. Performers of all ages, sizes and abilities are encouraged to audition on Friday, Sept. 26, Saturday, Sept. 27, or Sunday, Sept. 28.
