The Cine in Construcción film series at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Bank of America Theatre concludes this Thursday, Oct. 30, with the Argentine film Pueblo Chico . The film takes us to a lonely seaside town where nothing ever seems to change. One day, a group of foreign investors arrives, promising sweeping progress. The longtime mayor opposes these capitalists, touching off a war between tradition and modernity. The screening gets underway at 7 p.m. As always, the film is in Spanish with English subtitles and is free to the public.

This Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1 and 2, director Alex Beckstead will be at Guild Cinema in Nob Hill to present his documentary Paperback Dreams , the story of two landmark independent bookstores in San Francisco and their struggle to survive during two tumultuous years. UNM’s Continuing Education is starting a new class titled “Screenwriting: Your Original Screenplays Made Great.” Instructor Stephanie Kuehn will help you prepare your screenplay for a competitive market. This limited-space class will focus on pitching sessions, script development and individual attention for your personal project. Prior screenwriting experience is preferred. Instructor John Grace will give participants hands-on technical training in the assembly, operation and maintainance of 35mm and 16mm film cameras and digital cinema camcorders. The class is described as ideal for second assistants and camera PAs who want to move up within the camera department. Class meets Nov. 1, 2, 8 and 9 at Rio Grande Studios (6608 Gulton Court NE). Yes, it’s true. Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan will be in New Mexico to shoot his next film, The Spy Next Door . In it, he plays an ordinary man who is asked to babysit his neighbor’s children. He winds up having to protect them from secret agents after one of the kids accidentally downloads a top-secret code. The film’s director is local boy Brian Levant ( Snow Dogs, The Flintstones, Beethoven ). The production will shoot in and around Albuquerque in November and December. Producers expect to hire approximately 150 local crew members and more than 600 actors.
