Rocky Horror New Mexico is celebrating summer with a special RHNM beach party. The event will take place on Saturday, July 27 at 10:30 p.m. at the Aux Dog Theatre (3011 Monte Vista NE). The main event will, of course, be a screening of the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, complete with live shadowcast and audience participation. Audience members are requested to put on their “beach bunny and beach bro best” while the sexy shadowcast members of the HotDogs “sweat it out on stage for you.” Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance by going to rockyhorrornm.com.

Earlier this month teams of filmmakers took to the streets of Albuquerque with one goal in mind: write, shoot, edit and premiere a 7-minute film in only two days. On July 18 and 19, the KiMo Theatre played host to the 48 Hour Film Project, screening more than four dozen short films that resulted from the Albuquerque leg of this year’s fest. Filmmakers were all given a character, a line of dialogue and a prop to work into their mini-masterpieces. Each filmmaking team was also assigned a genre to work in—from romantic comedy to sci-fi to film noir. Now you can see the fruits of those labors in an easily digested form. On Thursday, July 25, KiMo (423 Central NW) will screen The Best of 48 Hour Films 2013. The best local films, as chosen by a panel of judges, will be shown starting at 7:30 p.m. Immediately after the screening, awards will be handed out. The winning shorts have a shot at competing against films from other cities at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. There will be an afterparty following the awards ceremony at Sister (407 Central NW) just down the street. Tickets are $10 and are available now at kimotickets.com.

The Fans of Film Cinema Café & Coffee House (504 Yale SE) is starting up a new series of screenings called Movie Monday. Every Monday starting at 3 p.m., the Café will stream films of social interest and try to build a discussion around those films. The series will launch on Monday, July 29, with the documentary THRIVE: What On Earth Will It Take? The makers of the film describe it as “an unconventional documentary that lifts the veil on what’s really going on in the world by following the money upstream—uncovering the global consolidation of power in nearly every aspect of our lives.” In some weird reverse psychology, head “conspiritualist” and Procter & Gamble heir Foster Gamble (who wrote, produced, directed and narrates THRIVE) has been denounced by even crazier Internet dwellers as a “paid disinformation agent” for the Illuminati or Satan or Big Oil or whatever. But hey, any film that manages to link international corporate and banking conspiracies with UFOs and crop circles rates an “intriguing” in my book. Screenings are free and open to the public.
