Though this week of the year—the filling in our Christmas and New Year’s cookie sandwich—is brimming with social engagements, there’s little in the way of public performances. It’s a hard time to be an arts writer, especially when one of the only events happening this week includes said arts writer, a writer who’s terribly uncomfortable with self-promotion (the event rhymes with Schmurch of Schmetoven; that’s all I’ll say). Rather than think about this time as a dead zone, though, it’s better to see it as a period of regeneration. Slowing down, living, taking things in; these are just as much a part of the artistic process as is active creation. Maybe it’s a good time, then, to think about what kinds of art you’d like to see in Albuquerque in 2010 and how you can make that happen. Whether as an artist, writer, musician or patron, I encourage you decide to make a conscious contribution to the arts in our city over the next year. Attend. Host. Donate. Discuss. I’m hopeful that 2010 will expand on, and in some ways explode, the tremendous things that have been going on in the Albuquerque arts world. That’s worth celebrating, and then it’s worth trumping. Have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy your family, your urban family, your work friends, your public transportation seat mate—whoever it is that makes this season bright. But don’t rest too long. We’ve got things to do.
