Itchy trigger finger? That can only mean one thing: It’s time for the Alibi ‘s seventh annual Photo Contest! This year, we’re doing things a little differently. First, we’re harkening back to the early days of this contest and bringing back categories, including ¡Que Albuquerque!, Things Are Not What They Seem, People Are People, Land Ho, Miscellaneous and Animals, and This Modern Life. Second, all entries must be submitted digitally by Sunday, March 14 (no snail mail this year; sorry daguerreotype enthusiasts). Culture Shock: Jews? Sweet! Jews? Sweet!
If you’re like me, you’re a Scots-English New Mexican Protestant who, since the age of 19, has been pretty sure you’re actually a Polish Jew. No? Just me, I mean, a friend of mine? Well, it’s a good thing that the Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque (5520 Wyoming NE) is open to all, not just the culturally confused. The JCC invites you to attend A Taste of Honey, its annual educational event that provides the opportunity to learn about what it means to be Jewish, from 3,000 years ago to today. The event, which takes place on Sunday, Feb. 21, from noon to 5 p.m., includes mini-courses on topics like klezmer dance, health and spirituality. Tickets are $25. Afterwards, join artist Sara M. Novenson for After Taste: Tapas, Art Talk and Tour as she discusses her Women of the Bible prints, creative process, and the role spirituality plays in her life and work. The tour is $15 with admission to A Taste of Honey, $20 without. A portion of the sales of her artwork and book will be donated to the JCC. Culture Shock: Beat It Beat It
As part of its celebration of Black History Month , the North Valley’s Los Griegos Library (1000 Griegos NW) presents Dina Reid and her dance troupe De Da’ De . Bring the kids, and enjoy all of the African drumming and dancing on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Friends for the Library, a fabulous group that’s always eager to make new friends while keeping the old.
