Photogs, clicksters, soul-capturers—what are you waiting for? The seventh annual Alibi Photo Contest is well underway, but lucky for you there’s still time to enter. Head over to alibi.com and click on “Photo Contest 2010.” You’ll see mucho info on categories, rules and submission guidelines. Winners, selected by a panel of Alibi staffers and honest-to-goodness photo experts, will score a heap of fabulous prizes, courtesy of local merchants. And this year, for the first time ever, you can visit our contest page on Flickr (f lickr.com/groups/alibiphotocontest2010) to see what others are entering. The photos submitted so far have set a pretty high bar. Will this be our best contest ever? I hope I’m not jinxing it when I say absolutely totally without a doubt completely. Many people I know love to live here because everyone’s a mind-blowing multitasker. Your orthodontist neighbor? Also a fire-eating performance artist. The burlesque dancer? She’s a kindergarten teacher who’s studying both Russian and accounting (but not Russian accounting, which is dangerous). So it shouldn’t be surprising that Downtown’s Ace Barber Shop (109 Fourth Street SW) also has some of the best art shows in town. Ace hosts a reception for its new show of paintings by Corky Frausto, Faded Photographs , on Friday, March 5. Culture Shock: Waste No Time Waste No Time
After staging a successful international theater festival, most humans would take a break, or at least a nap. Well, Tricklock Company must be made of different mettle than the rest of us, because the company is back with a world premiere of Juli Hendren’s Waste Her . The play, directed by Summer Olsson with dramaturgy by Elsa Menéndez, stars Hendren as a radical environmentalist and explores what drives passionate people to extreme measures. The show runs through March 14, with performances at the Tricklock Space at UNM (1705 Mesa Vista NE) Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15, $10 students and seniors.
