The Esther Bone Memorial Library (950 Pinetree SE in Rio Rancho) will host a free screening of The Concert for Bangladesh on Thursday, April 8, at 6 p.m. The film is a recording of George Harrison’s groundbreaking charity concert from 1971. Albuquerque independent filmmaker Rudy J. Miera (“Curanderas: Folk Healers”) has had his newest short, a music video collaboration with local composer Melyssa Garland, accepted to the Tupelo Film Festival. The piece, titled “Mexica,” features a performance by longtime local Aztec dance group Kalpulli Ehecatl. “Mexica” will screen at Tupelo’s seventh annual film festival, which takes place May 13 through 15. Reel World: Indigenous Screen Indigenous Screen
Some of Rudy J. Miera’s work will be screened locally as part of “Indigenous Film Night—A Lens on Health, Healing and Social Justice” at Trillion Space (501 Second Street NW). The event will take place Saturday, April 10. Doors open at 8 p.m., films start at 8:15 p.m. The event will feature local indigenous filmmakers from both American Indian and Latin American backgrounds who will share short films covering issues of identity, language, health and culture. There will be a short Q&A session after each film with the filmmakers. Two of the films screening that night are from Miera and are part of his “Curanderas: Folk Healers” series of short documentaries. “Un Caminante de Amor por la Paz en el Mundo” is an interview with Mayan Shaman Son Pedro Cruz Garcia. “La Plazita” features Chicano/Native activist Albino Garcia. Ticket price is a mere $4. All proceeds will go to benefit Native Health Initiative, a local community-based health partnership.

This Saturday, April 10, the Governor’s Council on Film and Media Industries will host a town hall meeting on the film industry in our state. The day-long meeting starts at 10 a.m. with a public feedback session. Breakout sessions feature topics like “Post-Production / Digital Media,” “Film Education in High Schools” and “The Future of the Film Industry.” This gathering will take place at CNM Workforce Training Center (5600 Eagle Rock NE).
