Local filmmakers: If you’ve waited until the last minute to submit your film (short or feature) to this year’s New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase, then that minute is upon you! You have until 5 p.m. this Thursday, April 22, to hand-deliver a copy of your film to Guild Cinema in Nob Hill (3405 Central NE). To download an application form (which must accompany each DVD submission), log on to nmfilm.com. This is a non-juried festival and all submissions are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The Filmmakers Showcase itself is free and open to the public and will take place May 13 through 16. Stay glued for more details.
Reel World: Shoot Early, Shoot Often Shoot Early, Shoot Often
The early deadline has passed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get involved in the newly revived Duke City Shootout. If you’ve got a proposal for a short film or music video you’d like to shoot under the supervision of the script-to-screen filmmaking competition, log on to dukecityshootout.org for submission rules. Regular deadline is May 1, late deadline is May 8 and extended deadline is May 15. The Shootout will take place this July with teams of filmmakers from all over the country scrambling to complete their projects in just one week. DCS provides crew, equipment, locations, editors, post-production facilities—everything you need to make a film. Not a bad deal. Assuming you’re one of the chosen few, of course. Reel World: Dance Movie Dance Movie
The Spanish Room , a feature-length documentary from local filmmaker Christopher Michael Roybal, will have its world premiere this Friday, April 23, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The screening will take place in NHCC’s Bank of America Theatre starting at 7 p.m. The film takes viewers behind the scenes of Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company, based out of the National Institute of Flamenco in Downtown Albuquerque. Weaving together interviews, rehearsal footage and live concert performance, the film showcases world-class dance originating right here in New Mexico. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in advance at Ticketmaster outlets. NHCC is located at 1701 Fourth Street SW.
Reel World: Get Educated Get Educated
Anyone interested in scoping out CNM’s film training program is invited to an open house tour on Tuesday, April 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. The tour will show off the CNM Workforce Training Center, located at 5600 Eagle Rock NE. Those interested in pursuing a career in the local film industry can learn about the course offerings and facilities available through CNM. Film crew faculty and students will be on hand to answer questions about camera operations, makeup, hair and wardrobe, sound, post-production, editing, and more. Admission is free.
