Frank Cullen, founder of the American Vaudeville Museum and author of Vaudeville Old and New: An Encyclopedia of Variety Performers in America , is launching a series of classic film screenings at the Guild Cinema starting this weekend. Cullen will be on hand to host the inaugural festival, titled The British Are Coming! This four-day fest features classic films from the Golden Age of Comedy. Four films from England’s legendary Ealing Studios are slated for screening: 1951’s The Man in the White Suit ; 1959’s I’m All Right Jack ; 1949’s Whiskey Galore ; and 1950’s The Happiest Days of Your Life . Admission prices are $7 per film or $10 per double feature. Cullen will be there to introduce each film and lead an audience discussion between double features. Trust me, the man knows his stuff. Future incarnations of this intermittent, yearlong festival will include When Comedy Was King in Hollywood (Sept. 17-22), The British Are Back (December) and Clowns and Idols of the Silent Screen (early 2011). Quote … Unquote Inc., the nonprofit operator of Albuquerque’s Community Media Center and Community Access Cable Channels 26 and 27, is hosting a monthly media industry mixer starting this Saturday, June 26. “Fliqueur” will take place the first Saturday of every month at Blackbird Buvette (509 Central NW) from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Fliqueur is described as a “networking opportunity for all media industry professionals.” Actors, film distributors, music licensers, film training programs, film office representatives and film crew resources are expected to participate. Each gathering will feature local short films as well as local performers, musicians and DJs. Special invited media industry guests will set up outreach tables to promote their organizations, events and programs. Admission is free but restricted to 21+ only. The 48 Hour Film Project will hold an open casting call this Saturday, June 26, for any actors interested in the upcoming script-to-screen festival. This audition will take place on the bottom floor of the 100 Gold Street Lofts in Downtown Albuquerque. Actors are asked to show up between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., and are required to prepare a one-and-a-half-minute monologue or a three-minute scene. Clips of every audition will be uploaded to the 48 Hour Film Project/Albuquerque YouTube channel, where competing teams will be able to view them and (hopefully) snatch up some of the local talent. The Albuquerque leg of 48 Hour will take place July 9 through 11—with teams working overtime to write, shoot, edit and premiere their short films—so actors should be prepared to work their butts off those days. Go to 48hourfilm.com/albuquerque for all the details.
