The Vintage Poster Gallery in Santa Fe is opening an exhibit called Reel Power: Great Vintage Film Posters featuring more than 300 rare film posters from The Rosenberg Collection. The show opens with a reception this Friday, Oct. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will run through Jan. 30, 2011, so you’ve got plenty of time to get up there and check it out. Reel World: Short Gets Validated Short Gets Validated
“Validated”
The locally produced short film “Validation”—a winner of the 2009 New Visions / New Mexico Contract Award—will have its world premiere screening this Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. The screening will get underway at 2:15 p.m. The film is described as a “short narrative comedy that follows two young men on their quest to get out of Albuquerque.” Burque native Ewen Wright wrote, directed and stars in the film. The filmmaker will be on hand at the screening, as will his cast and crew, for a Q and A session afterward. The cost of admission is $5. To view a trailer for the film, head to the film’s website.

The second annual Santa Fe Independent Film Festival gets underway this coming Tuesday. Kicking off the 2010 fest will be a free screening of the 1954 shot-in-New-Mexico classic Salt of the Earth, Herbert J. Biberman’s cinéma vérité drama about striking Mexican-American mine workers. Following that will be 80 features, documentaries, shorts and experimental films—all shown between Tuesday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 24. Notable features include Jimmy Bennett’s coming-of-age-in-NYC drama Bones (Thursday, 5:45 p.m.), Kai Blackwood’s alien abduction thriller Grey Skies (Friday, 5:45 p.m.) and Craig A. Butler’s shot-in-N.M. Western The Righteous and the Wicked (Sunday, 2:15 p.m.). Actor Russell Means ( The Last of the Mohicans, Natural Born Killers ) will be hanging around to accept the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Also in the pipeline: Gary Farmer hosting an actor’s discussion panel and filmmaker Scott Erickson leading a queer filmmaking discussion panel. Screenings will take place at Warehouse 21 (1614 Paseo De Peralta, Santa Fe). Discussions will be held at Aztec Café (317 Aztec, Santa Fe).
