The Cine en Construcción films series starts up again on Thursday, Feb. 17 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW) in the Bank of America Theatre. Kicking off the series of recent Latin American films is the 2003 Colombian film Sumas y Restas at 7 p.m. The film relates the story of a middle-class engineer who, plagued by money problems, falls in with a childhood-friend-turned-drug-smuggler. Like all films in the series, it’s in Spanish with English subtitles and admission is free.
Reel World: A Long, Strange Trip A Long, Strange Trip
389 Miles: Living the Border , a documentary film about life on the Arizona/Sonora border, will screen on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center beginning at 6 p.m. Director Luis Carlos Davis will be on hand to share his experiences bringing human faces to the contentious issue of immigration reform. In creating his film, Davis spoke not just to immigrants from Mexico, but to actual human-smugglers who make a living sneaking people into the United States. Reel World: Room With An Interview Room With An Interview
Friends of Film, Video, Arts will have its February meeting on Sunday, Feb. 20. The event will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the Harwood Basement Theater (1114 Seventh Street NW). Award-winning broadcaster Jane Blume, emergency medicine physician Coffee Brown and director/producer Anne Stirling will be the presenters for a special “Art of the Interview” program. This panel discussion will cover the finer points of interviewing subjects for documentary film and television. Admission is free to FoFVA members or $10 at the door for everyone else.
Reel World: Indie Thing Indie Thing
The Albuquerque Film Office’s networking group Indie Q will have its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hotel Andaluz (125 Second Street NW). As always, it’s a great opportunity to meet up with other indie filmmakers and check out screenings of what people are working on here in town. There is no cost to attend.
