St. John's Cinema—St. John's College in Santa Fe is getting ready to open its Spring 2004 Film Series. These double features run once about once a month on Saturdays beginning at 7 p.m. at the college's great hall, Peterson Student Center, second floor. General admission is a mere $3. The series kicks off on Jan. 31 with a double shot of foreign love stories featuring Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire and Michael Radford's Il Postino. Future weekends will spotlight James Bond (Feb. 7), John Wayne (March 6) and Shakespeare (April 17). You can find out more info by calling the St. Jone's College Film Society at 984-6158.
National Notoriety—In case you missed it, New Mexico's burgeoning film industry got some much-needed attention last Monday with a great feature article in the New York Times. The article spotlighted New Mexico's aggressive tax incentive program and $85 million investment fund (which helped bankroll Val Kilmer's upcoming thriller Blind Horizon). The article was written by Simon Romero, whom astute Alibi fans will recognize as our humble hometown paper's very first editor-in-chief. Keep up the good work, Simon.
College Casting Call—The College of Santa Fe is casting for three elaborate student films that will be produced in the next two months that have a combined amount of 50 roles to fill. Producers are looking for males and females between 10 and 60 years of age. The three films are: “Alice: Looking Glass World” (a gritty horror/fantasy adaptation of Lewis Carrol's Through the Looking Glass.); “Final Exam” (a suspense film in which a disgruntled chemistry teacher poisons his students and offers the antidote to the first one who can correctly complete the final exam); and “Shoes” (a man in the midst of a moral crisis tries to return a pair of bowling shoes he stole as a teenager). The open casting will take place on Saturday, Jan. 31, from noon to 5 p.m. at Greer Garson Communications Center, College of Santa Fe (1600 St. Michael's Drive).
