We're not talking about the kind with six legs. This kind's even scarier. It's the kind that creepy-crawls into your hard drive, chews up your world and poops it out its rear. In Ellen Ullman's new novel a new information technology firm in the mid '80s finds a bug in a database it's developing. According to advance readers, Ullman convincingly recreates all the quaintness of an era when programming was still in its relative infancy. This is no thriller. Ullman's goal is to show the nitty-gritty day to day tedium of programmers in the '80s. As such, The Bug is more satirical than realistic, but the novel contains enough black humor that it should keep even those who aren't digital dweebs entertained.
