Over the years, McGarrity has built quite a regional following for his Kevin Kerney mystery novels. Due to his background in law enforcement (he was a deputy sheriff for Santa Fe County and an investigator with the New Mexico Public Defender's Office), McGarrity is able to inject quite a bit of realistic detail into his books. Everyone Dies, the eighth book in the series, finds Kerney preparing for the birth of his first child when he's suddenly called in to investigate the murder of a prominent gay attorney. That very same day, Kerney also learns that his beloved horse has been killed. It seems like just particularly rotten luck until we discover the two incidents are weirdly connected.
