Martina Comstock, an independent filmmaker born and raised in Albuquerque, will return to her hometown on Friday, July 8, to show off her brand new short, “Pair of Opposites.” The 20-minute film is described as “an adventurous documentary exploring the paradox of deep-seated sibling rivalry and strong familial love.” The subjects of Comstock’s film are Martina herself and her brother, Alan. Over the course of the film, the dynamic sister-brother duo trade off personal pursuits in order to better understand one another. She’s a deeply spiritual yoga instructor / filmmaker, he’s a daredevil rock climber. Will walking in one another’s shoes bring them closer together? The film screens at 5:30 p.m. only at Guild Cinema and will be hosted by Martina and Alan. A mere $4 gets you in the door.

Santa Fe émigré and longtime underground filmmaker Jon Moritsugu ( Scumrock, Fame Whore, Mod Fuck Explosion ) just scored a major deal with Comcast cable. Moritsugu’s acclaimed 1993 film Terminal USA will be screened throughout the month of July as part of the company’s “Cinema Asian America” series. The controversial film (once described as ‘“Father Knows Best” meets Pink Flamingos ) was commissioned for PBS’ “American Experience.” Ever the punk rock rabble-rouser, Moritsugu gave them a film about skinheads, drug addicts, masturbation and prostitution. On Saturday, July 9, Sol Acting Academy will present the workshop “How to Break into the Film Industry in New Mexico and Succeed!” This introductory class will be taught by Laura Mathis, owner of Sol Acting. Mathis will cover everything from agents to casting directors to headshots to auditions. The class is open to all ages, but anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $50.
