Because he wants to show off the brand-new silver screen at the historic KiMo Theatre, Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry is inviting everyone to a free screening of the 2000 Western All the Pretty Horses . It’ll take place on Friday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Director Billy Bob Thornton ( Sling Blade ) filmed this modern tale of romance and betrayal right here in New Mexico. It’s based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy and stars Matt Damon, Penélope Cruz and Henry Thomas.

Also at the KiMo this coming week, the New Mexico Centennial Film Series continues with King Vidor’s 1936 feature The Texas Rangers starring Fred MacMurray and Gabby Hayes. The film was shot in Diablo Canyon and the San Ildefonso Pueblo, just outside of Santa Fe. This classic Western will screen on Wednesday, March 21, starting at 7 p.m. As with all films in the Centennial Film Series, admission is free. Get there early for the good seats!
Reel World: Monthy Series Seeks Subs Monthy Series Seeks Subs
The Reel New Mexico Independent Film Series is looking for independent works by New Mexico filmmakers or movies with a strong connection to the Land of Enchantment. Films will be part of an ongoing program of screenings taking place on the second Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Performance Space at La Tienda in the Eldorado suburb of Santa Fe. Filmmakers must be present during the screenings to discuss the production with audience members. Features, documentaries and shorts are all eligible for consideration. Not-quite-finished films from directors and producers wanting audience input before completion will also be considered. Reel New Mexico will preview all submissions and make selections for the Independent Film Series.
