The National Hispanic Cultural Center is celebrating the 20th annual César Chávez Day. The main event takes place on Saturday, April 6 with a march, concerts, speakers and more. On Thursday, April 4, however, there will be a free screening of the film Fight in the Fields. This hour-long documentary will help viewers learn more about César Chávez and the movement he inspired among American farmworkers. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with local labor union leaders, DREAM activists, clergy and minimum wage campaign organizers. The event gets underway at 6 p.m. in the NHCC’s Bank of America Theater (1701 Fourth SW).

KiMo jumps right back into the film scene on Wednesday, April 10, with the latest in the New Mexico Film Series ’13. This monthly collection of shot-in-our-state classics shines the spotlight on 1951’s Ace in the Hole. This fantastic film, directed by Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot, Sunset Boulevard), stars Kirk Douglas as a down-at-the-heels newspaper man in Albuquerque who finds the story of the year when a man gets stuck in a cave out by Gallup. Naturally he starts milking the drama for all it’s worth. This is really one of the best, most overlooked films shot in the Land of Enchantment and features tons of mid-century New Mexico sightseeing. The film starts at 7 p.m. and is free to the public.
Reel World: Casting For Comedy Casting For Comedy
“Buffalo in the Room,” a proposed comedy series focusing on Native Americans, is holding two open casting calls for several roles. The casting calls will be held Friday, April 5, at The Lodge at Santa Fe (744 Calle Mejia) and Saturday, April 6, at Nativo Lodge hotel (6000 Pan American Freeway NE). Both days run from noon to 5 p.m. The 15-episode series follows the adventures of a “young Native American actress in New Mexico as she chases her dreams of making it in the entertainment industry.” This is a nonunion shoot.
