Writers of fiction and poetry, now’s your chance to dig out your very best unpublished work and give it a final polish. Blue Mesa Review—the national literary magazine out of UNM—is accepting submissions to its annual contest until August 31. Just 12 bucks earns your piece the right to compete for a prize of $250 plus publication in BMR. Fiction judge Sherman Alexie (yes, the Sherman Alexie) and poetry judge Michael Dickman will be combing through mountains of entries to uncover “startling, compelling and beautiful original work.” Don’t bother with the embossed linen paper, though, because content is king and submissions (including multiple and simultaneous) are only accepted online at bluemesareview.org.

Digital media artists and artists whose work addresses technology through traditional mediums have an opportunity to get in on Digital Latin America, an international exhibition with a weekend symposium and Downtown Block Party presented by 516 ARTS. Building off of last fall’s impressive International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA2012), Digital Latin America “explores the North/South axis of cultural development and exchange between South America, Central America and the Southwestern United States, with a focus on New Mexico as the Northern tip of Latin America.” It’s serious fun with a cutting-edge technological bent. If your talents run more to dance, theater, music, performance art or interacting with the public, you’ll want to take part in the Downtown Block Party. Deadline for entries of every stripe is Friday, September 27, with a $20 entry fee. The exhibition, symposium and block party will happen in June of next year. Visit 516arts.org for a lavish rundown of the details.

Pastel artists, your exquisite pigments might be just the thing to dazzle at the 22nd Annual National Pastel Painting Exhibition, helmed every year by the Pastel Society of New Mexico. The show will take place November 1-24, 2013 at the Hispanic Arts Center in EXPO New Mexico, and winners will be showered with cash prizes ranging from $500 to $1,500. Step one: Get accepted into the show. Submit digital entries by Thursday, August 15; cost is $40 for up to 3 entries ($35 for PSNM members). Three jury members will independently score entries and determine who’s got what it takes to be in the running for the big bucks and the glory. At the PSNM website (pastelsnm.org), you’ll not only find all the necessary entry information, but also videos and step-by-step advice for photographing and shipping your work.
