NBC’s new drama “The Night Shift” is filming in Albuquerque, hopefully filling some of the hole left when AMC’s “Breaking Bad” closed up shop. The series is set in a San Antonio hospital where a group of ex-Army doctors work the late-night emergency room shift. Filming began in late August and will continue through mid-November. Producers are currently looking for background extras for upcoming scenes. According to the casting directors, the series is on the hunt for “all different looks, all different ethnicities: cowboys and girls, interesting character faces, men with big mustaches and beards, Texas looks, amputees, gangsters, punks, everything.” They’re also looking for “real types” including real doctors and nurses to fill out the show. Reel World: Searching For Dizzy Searching For Dizzy
The SAG feature film Midnight Sun, which chronicles the building of the atomic bomb in the 1940s, is looking for musicians to fill out a period scene. The film—starring Jesse Eisenberg, Emile Hirsch and Diane Kruger—will start shooting in the Santa Fe/Los Alamos area on Sept. 30 and wrap up sometime around the end of October. Actor-turned-director Chris Eigeman (Barcelona, The Last Days of Disco) is behind the camera on this one. Reel World: Open Hearts Open Hearts
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Reel New Mexico film series at La Tienda in Eldorado will present the 1993 romantic Western Cheatin’ Hearts starring James Brolin, Sally Kirkland and Kris Kristofferson. The film was lensed in Hillsboro and Truth or Consequences. It was written and directed by Rod McCall, who presented his film Becoming Eduardo in June at Reel New Mexico. The screening will take place at The Performance Space at La Tienda Center outside Santa Fe starting at 7pm. A suggested contribution of $5 gets you in the door.

Director Landon Dyksterhouse’s New Mexico-shot documentary The Proving Grounds concentrates on the world-famous Jackson family. The Jacksons’ mixed martial arts gym in Albuquerque has produced some of the strongest MMA fighters in the world. Among the people featured in the film are coach Greg Jackson, UFC fighter Jon “Bones” Jones and the rest of the Jackson’s MMA family.
