French Funerals-Cremations continues its irreverent but inspired series of funeral/death-based movie screenings on Thursday, Sept. 26. This month’s movie night screening will feature the 2011 film Bernie. Starring Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine, the black comedy relates the true-life story of a very likable small-town Texas mortician who struck up a friendship with a cranky-but-wealthy widow only to kill her for her dough. In the end most people in town still liked the guy. The screening will take place at French Mortuary (10500 Lomas NE) at 5pm. Popcorn and refreshments will be served. After the film, Gail Rubin, award-winning speaker and author of A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die, will facilitate a discussion of the issues raised by the film. Rocky Horror New Mexico presents an old-fashioned Science Fiction Double Feature Picture Show on Saturday, Sept. 28. First up will be a screening of the 2001 drag show rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch starring John Cameron Mitchell at 8pm. Stick around after that for 1975’s certified cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Reel World: The Weight Of Water The Weight Of Water
Talk show host Montel Williams will be the special guest at a movie screening this Sunday, Sept. 29, at KiMo Theatre. Williams is the narrator of the new PBS documentary Sea of Change. The film examines the idea of “freedom through weightlessness” and follows Albuquerque native Cody Unser—paralyzed since age 12—as she leads a group of nine disabled veterans to a reef 60 feet below the surface of the ocean. This amazing experiment was undertaken by doctors at Johns Hopkins. Introductions begin at 3:30pm. The documentary premieres at 4pm. A post-film Q&A featuring producer Chris Schueler, Cody Unser, Montel Williams and Dr. Daniel Becker of Johns Hopkins will begin around 5pm. Reel World: Puzzle Party Puzzle Party
Everyone’s looking for a way to finance their indie film projects. The producers behind the upcoming local project The Jigsaw Puzzle Murders will host a fundraising party and auction on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Uptown Sports Bar and Grill (6601 Uptown NE) beginning at 7pm. There will be a number of Albuquerque artists providing their works for silent auction. Plus you’ll get to share drinks specials with cast and crew.
