Calling all True Believers! In honor of this weekend’s release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the weekly Geeks Who Drink pub quiz will host a special Avengers-themed trivia night on Thursday, April 3. The quiz will stick mostly to the eight Marvel Studios films, but fans can expect a selection of stumpers based on the long-running comic book series as well. The event starts at 8pm at O’Neill’s in the Heights (3301 Juan Tabo NE). Teams are limited to six persons maximum, with a $5 admission fee for each player. Costumes are encouraged. Hmm. I’m not busy Thursday night. … Just saying.

Reel World: Transtastic! Transtastic!

Closet Cinema, producers of the annual Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, have joined forces with the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico to create Albuquerque’s first transgender film festival. Transtastic! kicks off this Friday, April 4, with an opening night party at ArtBar (119 Gold SW). Mix and mingle with special guests and attendees amid DJs, drink specials and one-of-a-kind performances starting at 8pm. On Saturday, April 5, the film festival starts off at noon with the documentary Transvisible: The Bamby Salcedo Story, which relates the story of the iconic Latina activist and transgender spokesperson. Salcedo herself will be on hand to introduce the film. That will be followed by Too Cold Out There Without You (2pm), Open Up To Me (4:15pm) and Turning (6:15pm). Things wrap up at 8:15pm with the award-winning Israeli drama Melting Away. This film explores the life of Assaf (Hen Yanni), kicked out of his parents’ house for collecting women’s clothing. Years later Assaf’s parents hire a private detective to hunt him down. What they find is a beautiful transgender performer named Anna. With Anna’s father now dying, can the family make the journey to tolerance and acceptance before it’s too late? For complete descriptions of the films, go to swglff.com/transtastic2014.
