The 48 Hour Film Project wrapped up last weekend with its big premiere screening. Dozens of film crews raced around the Duke City scrambling to write, direct, edit and screen a short film in just two days. This Friday, July 25, you’ve got the opportunity to check out the best of this year’s fest. The top films from 2014 will be screened at the KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) starting at 7:30pm. This will be followed by an award ceremony in which the judges’ choices in a variety of categories will be singled out and showered with fame and fortune (fame, mostly). Tickets are $10.
Reel World: Outdoor Cinema Outdoor Cinema
Movies on the Mesa continues this Saturday night at Mesa del Sol. On July 26 they’ll present a free screening of The Lego Movie. There will be face painting and a bounce house for the kids, plus several food trucks to choose from. Blankets and folding chairs are encouraged. Gates open at 6pm. The movie starts around 8:30pm. The movie will be shown outdoors on the new 30-foot screen located at Aperture Plaza (5700 W. University SE #310). Arrive early for the best seat under the stars.
Reel World: Sweet Child Sweet Child
Child of the Earth, a feature-length horror/comedy film shot right here in Albuquerque, will have its premiere on Saturday, July 26, at the South Broadway Cultural Center’s John Lewis Theatre (1025 Broadway SE). Several places (including the Alibi) incorrectly listed the premiere as June 26, but it’s not. It’s July 26. The film concerns five friends who “ignore unsettling warnings and set up camp on unfamiliar grounds.” What was supposed to be a weekend of drunken fun soon “turns out to be more terrifying than they could have imagined.” Admission is $8 at the door. El Chante: Casa de Cultura is about to host another Pachuco Movie Night. On Sunday, July 27, starting at 8pm, you can catch the short documentary “American Blow Back: NM Black Berets” and the Cheech Marin comedy Born in East LA. Admission is free. El Chante is located at 804 Park SW. Food will be available for sale.
Reel World: In A Musical Mood? In A Musical Mood?
Cinemark nationwide is launching Best Movie Fest Ever, a monthly series dedicated to classic film. It lanuches this month with “My Favorite Musicals,” a collection of sing-along faves. On Saturday, July 26, select theaters will screen digitally restored versions of Hello, Dolly!, Moulin Rouge! and Oklahoma! That’s three entire musicals with exclamation points in the title—so you know it’s gonna be exciting. A mere $15 gets you in the door to all three films, which will include special guest introductions, theater promotions and giveways. Locally, the fest will hit Century Rio 24 (4901 Pan American Freeeway NE) at 11:15am (Hello, Dolly!), 2:20pm (Moulin Rouge!) and 5pm (Oklahoma!). If you can’t make it this Saturday, there will be a repeat of the event on Tuesday, July 29, at 1pm, 4:15pm and 7pm.
