The “Life in New Mexico” Collaborative Media Project solicited short, shot-in-New-Mexico clips from filmmakers all over the state. The clips were then sent to a group of eight local film/video editors who were tasked with taking all those film clips and trying to tell a “visual story” in 10 minutes or less. The result is The New Mexico Edit. The New Mexico Film Foundation, Friends of Film Video and Arts, the New Mexico Post Alliance and the New Mexico Tourism Department are now touring The New Mexico Edit around our state. This weekend 12 cinematic locations, from Taos to Carlsbad, will screen the finished shorts. On Saturday, Sept. 20, you can catch it at the Center for Contemporary Arts Cinematheque (1050 Old Pecos Tr.) in Santa Fe starting at 11:30am. On Sunday, Sept. 21, it will be at the South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway SE) starting at 7pm.

!Globalquerque!, our city’s annual celebration of world music and culture, returns to the National Hispanic Cultural Center this weekend. In addition to all the fantastic music—representing nations from the Czech Republic to China—the NHCC has been hosting a month-long International Cinema Series. That continues this Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7pm with the Chinese musical dramedy The Piano in a Factory. On Saturday, Sept. 20, the New Mexico-made Native American women’s documentary A Thousand Voices will screen at 11am, and the South African-made orphanage documentary We Are Together will screen at 2pm. The series concludes on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7pm with the Mexican father-son drama Alamar. All screenings are free, but tickets need to be picked up at the Bank of America Theatre box office (1701 Fourth Street SW) starting an hour before showtime.

New Mexico Women in Film, TV & Media whets your appetite for its new screenwriting competition by hosting two special events featuring two renowned New Mexico screenwriters. Matthew McDuffie will present “The Art of the Short: A Workshop for Screenwriters” on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 7pm at the Sol Acting Academy (5500 San Mateo NE). McDuffie is a screenwriting professor at UNM, and his credits include works for HBO, Showtime, FOX, CBS, USA, Lifetime and more. Cost for the workshop is $25. On Monday, Sept. 22, from 5:30 to 8pm, award-winning screenwriter Kirk Ellis (two Emmys and four Golden Globes) will offer a Screen Talk at Santa Fe’s Jean Cocteau Cinema (418 Montezuma Ave.). Admission is $15 or free for NMWIF members. The NMWIF Screenwriting Competition, entitled “The Woman in the Story,” will open for submissions on Sept. 22. There’s a $25 entry fee per script. First prize is $1,000 and a professional table read of the winning script. All New Mexico residents are eligible to participate. Scripts must be no longer than 10 pages and feature a female protagonist. Deadline for entry is Dec. 1, 2014.
