Thanks to the rise in digital filmmaking and projection, a lot of commercial film labs have started shutting their doors. However—as is often the case—there’s a growing counterculture movement aimed at preserving these fast-disappearing filmic arts. Australian experimental filmmaker Richard Tuohy is a prominent figure in today’s cinematic DIY scene and has helped build an international network of artist-run film labs. On Thursday, Nov. 6, Basement Films will host a special “Hand-Crafted 2 Cinema” show in the new subterranean screening room at Harwood Art Center (1114 Seventh Street NW). This special program will consist of eight hand-processed, DIY-printed 16mm film works from Tuohy’s recent output. Admission is a mere $5. The show starts at 7pm.

Reel World: Good To Be “Bad” Good To Be “Bad”

If the number of Heisenberg outfits seen at Halloween and Day of the Dead are any indication, we Albuquerque residents still aren’t over the loss of “Breaking Bad.” The biggest surprise is that it’s taken some enterprising locals this long to come up with the first annual Albuquerque Breaking Bad Fan Fest. This TV fan fest is set for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8, with the majority of events taking place at the Kiva Auditorium (401 Second Street NW). This is an opportunity to see filming locations, meet a few cast members and connect with fans from “all over the world.” Scheduled guests include Steven Michael Quezada (Agent Steven Gomez), Charles Baker (Skinny Pete), Jeremiah Bitsui (Victor), Daniel Moncada (Leonel Salamanca), Luis Moncada (Marco Salamanca) and Max Arciniega (Krazy-8). Behind-the-scenes talent includes location scout Alex Gianopoulos, stunt coordinator Al Goto and transportation captain Greg Bronner. In addition to the tours, panel discussions, costume contests and autograph signings, vendors will be on hand—hopefully with lots of “Breaking Bad” merchandise.

Reel World: “Earth” Day “Earth” Day

The New Mexico Film Foundation and Santa Fe Mayor Javier M. Gonzales have declared Saturday, Nov. 8, “Earth 2 Day.” Twenty years ago NBC aired the 22-episode sci-fi series “Earth 2.” It was the first major TV series produced entirely in New Mexico and was critical to launching the local industry we know and love today. The event will kick off at 6pm with a reading for the mayor’s proclamation. That will be followed by a screening at the Jean Cocteau Cinema (418 Montezuma Ave.) of the original pilot episode of “Earth 2.” A Q&A with assistant director Janet Davidson and other crew members will follow. To reserve tickets go to eventbrite.com. A $20 suggested donation gets you in the door. All proceeds will go to benefit the New Mexico Film Foundation.

Reel World: Wild Movies Wild Movies

The New Mexico Environmental Law Center will present the South Yuba River Citizens League’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival on Saturday, Nov. 8, starting at 6pm. There will be a silent auction, music, food, a cash bar and, of course, films. Former gubernatorial candidate and Fast Company founder Alan Webber will be the special guest. A total of nine short films will be screened. Topics run the gamut from the mythology of the Northern New Mexico Tewa people to daily bike commuting to handicapped rock climbing to natural gas extraction to sustainable consumerism. It will all take place at the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market Pavilion (1607 Paseo de Peralta). Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
