Who’s in the mood for some space monsters? Downtown Albuquerque’s KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) kicks off its Sci-Fi Friday event with Ridley Scott’s 2012 film Prometheus. Screenings start at 6pm and 8:30pm this Friday, March 6. Given that it’s the kinda-sorta prequel to Alien, it makes sense that the next screening will be 1979’s Alien on Friday, March 20. Aliens (1986) closes the series out on Friday, March 27. Tickets are $8 adults, $6 students and seniors.

Reel World: High Times High Times

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to the KiMo Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, March 11 and 12. For this event organizers have chosen the best from approximately 350 films entered into the annual festival in Alberta, Canada. These award-winning short films comprise a collection of “the most inspiring action, environmental and adventure films” of the year. Buy a ticket and you can take a trip to various exotic landscapes around the world, encountering mountain sports, high-altitude culture and environmental topics. Screenings run 7 to 9:30pm both nights. A one-day ticket costs $14. A two-day pass will run you $24. They’re available now through kimotickets.com, and a portion of the proceeds benefit NM Wilderness Alliance and the Mountain Fund.

Reel World: Samurai Cinema Samurai Cinema

St. John’s College in Santa Fe is starting up this year’s community seminars with a look at some classics of international cinema. The seminars are described as “special opportunities for community members to read and discuss seminal works in the same unique manner as our students.” The first, discussion-based seminar will focus on the work of master Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. “The Warriors Way: Three Films by Akira Kurosawa” will consist of four seminars led by St. John’s College tutor Krishnan Venkatesh. Saturday, March 14, from 10am to noon and from 2 to 4pm will be the first two sessions. Sunday, March 15, from 10am to noon and from 2 to 4pm will be the final two. Saturday will be devoted to Kurosawa’s epic Seven Samurai (1954), while Sunday will tackle Yojimbo (1961) and Sanjuro (1962). Cost is $140. Teacher and student discounts are available. Reel World: Seeking Student Submissions Seeking Student Submissions

The 2015 Desert Light Film Competition has issued a statewide call for entries looking for student filmmakers willing to showcase their work, compete for prizes and participate in seminars. This 12th annual event will be held at the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts in Alamogordo on April 24. Categories for submission include drama/comedy, music video, documentary, experimental film and 30-second commercial. Films will be judged in both high school and middle school categories. First place winners will claim $100 in prize money. Honorable mention awards are $50 each. Interested student filmmakers have until Friday, March 13, to submit. A $5 entry fee per film is required.
