Albuquerque’s historic KiMo Theatre (423 Central NE) is getting into the season with a summer of incredible films on the silver screen. Between beloved horror films, classic dramas and favorite action films, KiMo’s got a little something for everyone.By way of example, Friday Fright Nights returns to KiMo with another edition of Sci-Fi Second Takes. This one will feature the 1951 classic The Thing from Another World, in which a group of Arctic scientists battle a frozen outer space monster. It will be screened Friday, June 26, at 6 and 8:30pm. Come back on Friday, July 3, and you’ll be able to catch the “second take”—director John Carpenter’s gory 1982 remake, The Thing. That will also be screened at 6 and 8:30pm. On Saturday, June 27, KiMo pays tribute to great films with a screening of Orson Welles’ 1941 classic of classics, Citizen Kane, in which the famed director/actor not-so-subtly criticizes the life of media mogul William Randolph Hearst. The film will screen at 3 and 6pm. Starting Wednesday, July 1, KiMo will revisit the ‘90s Batman films, starting with Tim Burton’s smash 1989 hit Batman. The film will play at 3 and 7pm. That will be followed, of course, by 1992’s Batman Returns (July 15), 1995’s Batman Forever (July 22) and 1997’s Batman and Robin (Aug. 5). You can get a pass for all four films for $30 (general admission) or $22 (student/senior). Single ticket prices for any of the Batman films (or Citizen Kane or The Thing films) will run $8 general admission and $6 for students and seniors. Go to kimotickets.com to get them in advance.
Directors, writers, producers, editors, cinematographers, SPFX makers, actors: It’s time to get together. The New Mexico Film Foundation, the New Mexico Post Alliance and New Mexico Women in Film are joining forces to host their first-ever Albuquerque Filmmaker Mixer. This event will take place at the new Rio Bravo Brewery (1912 Second Street NW) on Saturday, June 27, starting at 2pm. This is a great opportunity to meet-and-greet with some fellow New Mexico filmmakers. Have a bite to eat, grab a brew or two, and hobnob like there’s no tomorrow. This could be a prime opportunity for you to network with up-and-coming filmmakers just like you. This event is free to attend. There will be free food and a cash bar. Are you up for the challenge of writing, directing, editing and debuting a short film in only two days? You’ll be given a genre, a character, a prop and a line of dialogue. The rest is up to you. If this sounds like your cup of tea, you have until Wednesday, July 1, to assemble a crack team and catch the Early Bird registration of the 48 Hour Film Project. It’s $140 per team, and you can sign up by going to 48hourfilm.com/albuquerque-nm. The 48 Hour Film Project will get underway on July 24 right here in Albuquerque (as well as dozens of other cities around the globe). Participants could win a grand prize and an opportunity to screen at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016.
