The Saturday, July 4, will see the New Mexico premiere of a new short film about internationally renowned local artist Judy Chicago. The 22-minute film, titled “A Butterfly for Brooklyn” and directed by Kate Amend, documents Chicago’s April 2014 fireworks installation in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Chicago and her husband, photographer Donald Woodman, will be joined by Kevin Lederer and Aaron Silva (two Belen residents who helped set up the pyrotechnic display) to share their experience and answer questions. The screening/Q&A will take place at 2pm at the Belen Public Library (333 Becker Ave.). A reception will follow at the Harvey House Museum in Belen (104 N. First Street). The event is free, but seating is limited. Call Ronnie Torres at 514-3911 to reserve seats.

Food trucks will be on site, and the event is dog friendly. Parking is available under Civic Plaza for a small fee. As a prelude to its seventh annual outing, the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival is hosting a summer film series to “excite and delight” audiences with free screenings, special guests and one-of-a-kind events. This Friday, July 3, at the CCA Cinematheque (1050 Old Pecos Trail), SFIFF is hosting a screening of this year’s Sundance Film Festival fave The Overnight. This adult comedy stars Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”) and Taylor Schilling (“Orange Is the New Black”) as a married couple who accept an invite to an increasingly bizarre dinner party hosted by a stranger (Jason Schwartzman, Rushmore). The screening begins at 7:30pm and will be followed by a Skype Q&A with director Patrick Brice. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8.50 seniors, $8 members and $7 student/senior members.
