Award-winning First Nations writer-director Georgina Lightning’s new film Fantasies of Flying will receive an exclusive preview screening this Thursday, July 16, at the Santa Fe Art Institute. From 7 to 9pm, the public is invited to come view a rough cut of the film, followed by an open discussion with Lightning on its themes—including “suicide, suicide prevention, trauma and various forms of healing.” Lightning is seeking constructive feedback for the second edit of the film. SFAI promises an “exciting gathering of Native American artists, filmmakers, policy makers, healers and members of the broader SFAI community.” Admission is free, but you do need to RSVP with Eventbrite to ensure a seat. Reel World: Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop
Every July Joss Whedon allows Serenity—the feature film spinoff of his cult sci-fi series “Firefly”—to screen at theaters across the country as a charity fundraiser. This Saturday, July 18, marks the 10th anniversary of the “Can’t Stop the Serenity” screenings. Local fan club Albuquerque Browncoats are pulling out all the stops to make this year’s event a big deal. The first 200 online ticket buyers get a 2015 Swag Pack, featuring a Fruity Oaty bar, an exclusive 10th anniversary button, a bunch of stickers and more. In addition, there will be incredible memorabilia for sale at the screening, including t-shirts, posters, patches and a special edition coin. As if that weren’t enough, there will be raffles, food, fun, music, a costume contest and, of course, a damn fine movie to watch. All proceeds benefit Equality Now and UNM Children’s Hospital. This July 19 is Give Back Sunday at B2B Bistronomy in Nob Hill (3118 Central SE). The restaurant will be donating 20 percent of all food purchases after 12pm to the New Mexico Film Foundation. NMFF is a relatively new nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the independent film industry in New Mexico by offering “financial support and educational opportunities” to our state’s indie-minded moviemakers. In the past year, they’ve offered workshops, grants, the “Life in New Mexico” media project and the New Mexico Film Foundation Actors Showcase. Their goal is to establish an accelerator which will help filmmakers with the business side of the film industry—from preproduction to budgeting to marketing and distribution.
