Albuquerque filmmakers Deryle Perryman and Moises Gonzalez will be presenting their five-years-in-the-making documentary Same Same But Different on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the historic KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW). Set nearly 40 years since the last American helicopter lifted off in the Vietnam War, the film captures American and Vietnamese soldiers coming together and coming to terms with their experiences. The film starts at 7pm and will be followed by a concert from Santa Fe-based musician Terry Allen. This “Evening For Vietnam” event is part of a fundraiser for TwoBricks, an Albuquerque nonprofit building music schools and clinics in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. Tickets are on sale now ($10 to $100).
Reel World: Cinema Of Migration Cinema Of Migration
The Migration Experience is a four-week film and discussion series taking place at the African American Performing Arts Center at EXPO New Mexico (310 San Pedro NE). The series starts on Oct. 8 at 6:30pm with the documentary Cambodian Son. The series—presented by Artful Life and supported by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council—will continue on Thursdays throughout October. Each film will be presented by two community scholars, one of whom migrated to the US from the country/region featured in the film. Future films include Pushing the Elephant from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Oct. 15), Iraqi Voices (Oct. 22) and Guatemala’s La Juala de Oro/The Gilded Cage (Oct. 29). Admission is free and open to the public.
Reel World: All That Jazz All That Jazz
The Albuquerque swing dance community has partnered with the Rio Grande Jazz Society and other local musicians to produce a jazz and dance event this weekend featuring a screening of the groundbreaking 1943 African-American musical Stormy Weather starring legendary performers Bill Robinson, Lena Horne, Cab Calloway and Fats Waller. The film will screen at the UNM SUB Theater on Sunday, Oct. 11, from noon to 2pm. Admission is $5 at the door. This is part of a three-day event, the Albuquerque Jazz and Swing Soiree.
Reel World: Santa Fe Gets Independent Santa Fe Gets Independent
The Seventh Annual Santa Fe Independent Film Festival will launch this coming Wednesday, Oct. 14, with its Opening Night Film, The Adderall Diaries. This dramatic memoir relates the true story of writer Stephen Elliot—who, stymied by past success and substance abuse, struggles to chronicle a bizarre murder trial. James Franco, Ed Harris and Amber Heard Depp are among the crackerjack cast. The film will screen at Violet Crown Cinema (1606 Alcaldesa) starting at 7pm. Tickets are $20 apiece and include admission to the Opening Night After-Party. That’s just the beginning, of course. This year’s SFIFF received more than 1,000 entries from more than 40 countries. Programmers whittled that down to five, jam-packed days’ worth of features, documentaries and shorts. A complete schedule of films screening Oct. 14 through 18 is available.
