Thursday 26

“Red Nose Day” (KOB-4 8pm) The idea behind this largely British tradition—started by the Comic Relief organization in 1988—is to wear a red clown nose and raise money for poor children worldwide. Makes perfect sense.

Showing Roots (Lifetime 8:02pm) Before showing its new Roots remake, Lifetime airs this uplifting movie about two women who watch the original miniseries and try to integrate their small town back in 1977. Maggie Grace, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth McGovern, Adam Brody and Cicely Tyson star.

Friday 27

“ELeague” (TBS 8pm) Your prayers for a live, televised electronic sports league (in other words: people playing video games on TV) have been answered. “ELeague” launches tonight with group play of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Saturday 28

“National Enquirer Investigates” (Reelz 7pm) Finally, some real journalism on TV! The staff of the esteemed supermarket tabloid The National Enquirer looks into the death of Marilyn Monroe. … And so timely too.

Sunday 29

“National Memorial Day Concert” (KNME-5 7pm) Opera soprano Renée Fleming and some iteration of The Beach Boys perform. It’s the best America could do, vets. You can also get 10 free wings at participating Hooters restaurants. Thanks for your service.

Monday 30

“The American Veterans Center’s 2016 National Memorial Day Parade” (Reelz 12pm) Hope you like Sousa.

The Dresser (Starz 7pm) Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Anthony Hopkins star in this drama about a backstage hand and his devotion to the brilliant but tyrannical head of a touring Shakespearean theatre company, struggling to carry on during the London Blitz. This one’s based on Ronald Harwood’s play, which was made into an Academy Award-nominated 1983 movie.

Roots (Lifetime/A&E/History/Lifetime Movie Network 7pm) A bunch of cable channels reboot the landmark 1977 miniseries based on Alex Haley’s historical saga of the same name. Roman Armstrong, Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, T.I. Harris, Mekhi Phifer, James Purefoy and Laurence Fishburne are among the new cast.

Tuesday 31

“Maya & Marty” (KOB-4 9pm) “SNL” vets Maya Rudolph and Martin Short try valiantly to revive the old TV variety show format recently championed by … well, Maya Rudolph, for one. Her singing-dancing-comedy showcase “The Maya Rudolph Show” aired all of once back in May of 2014.

Wednesday 1

“American Ninja Warrior” (KOB-4 7pm) NBC kicks off an 8th season of its impossible obstacle course competition.

“The iHeartRadio Summer Pool Party” (KWBQ-19 7pm) Flo Rida, DNCE, Tinashe, Kygo and Jason Derulo are among the performers. Hopefully some of those words make sense to you.

“Cleverman” (Sundance 11pm) This Aboriginal superhero series is an American-Australian-New Zealand co-production. In a dystopian near-future, super-powered mythical creatures fight to live among humans who want to silence, exploit and destroy them.
