Since 1927 the KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque has hosted its fair share of Hollywood films. Though it stopped being a first-run movie venue decades ago, the historic theater remains dedicated to the art of classic Hollywood films. Programmers have lined up some fantastic film series for the month of September. You should definitely check some of them out. It’s the perfect excuse to see movies up on the silver screen as God and Louis B. Mayer intended. First off the Albuquerque Museum continues its “Mother Road” movie series, celebrating films centered along historic Route 66. This month will feature 1994’s Forrest Gump (Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7pm), 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine (Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7pm) and 2007’s Wild Hogs (Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7pm). Tickets for these screenings are a mere $5.Also in September is the “60s Hitch” festival, featuring some incredible thrillers from legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. On Friday, Sept. 2, it’s 1963’s The Birds at 6 and 8:30pm. On Friday, Sept. 16, it’s 1964’s Marnie at 6 and 8:30pm. On Friday, Sept. 23, it’s 1966’s Torn Curtain at 6 and 8:30pm. Individual tickets are $8 (general admission) and $6 (students/seniors). You can also purchase a three-film pass for $20 (general admission) or $15 (students/seniors). Finally, the “AFI Countdown” continues, showing off some of the essential movies in the American Film Institute’s listing of the top 100 films of all time. The next few weekends will showcase 1939’s The Wizard of Oz (Saturday, Sept. 3, at 2 and 6pm; Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2pm), 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia (Saturday, Sept. 10, at 4pm; Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2pm) and 1972’s The Godfather (Saturday, Oct. 8, at 2 and 6pm; Sunday, Oct. 9, at 2pm). As with the Hitchcock series, individual tickets run $8 (general admission) and $6 (students/seniors). You can purchase a three-film pass for $20 (general admission) or $15 (students/seniors). All passes/tickets for all three films series can be purchased in advance by going to kimotickets.com.
On Thursday, Sept. 1, rocker and filmmaker Rob Zombie will premiere his new flick Rob Zombie’s 31 at 400 select theaters across America, courtesy of Fathom Events. The film will screen locally at Century Rio 24 (4901 Pan American Fwy. NE), Century 14 Downtown (100 Central SW) and Cottonwood 16 (10000 Coors Bypass) starting at 7pm. The film (Mr. Zombie’s seventh!) is described as “a horrific story of five carnival workers who are kidnapped on Halloween night and forced to play a terrifying game in an industrial hell.” Well, the guy knows what he likes. The screening will also feature two music video premieres, a never-before-seen “making of” featurette and a Q&A with the director filmed specifically for this cinema event. Tickets can be purchased in advance by going to fathomevents.com/event/rob-zombies-31. They’ll set you back $15 for adults, $14 for students/seniors and $13 for children (which, in this case, sounds like a really bad idea).
