Reel New Mexico—the Santa Fe-based New Mexico film series—ends its two and a half year run at the La Tienda Performance Space in Eldorado on Thursday, Jan. 12. At least organizers are going out on a high note, bringing one of the favorite homegrown New Mexico films. The Milagro Beanfield War, adapted from the 1974 novel by John Nichols and directed by Robert Redford, will screen starting at 7pm. A suggested donation of $5 gets you in the door. Reel World: Recuerdo Rio Recuerdo Rio
The brand new documentary Nasario Remembers the Rio Puerco began at Santa Fe’s Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse when director Shebana Coelho heard author and celebrated folklorist Nasario García tell stories of his boyhood in the ghost towns of New Mexico’s Rio Puerco valley. Coming full circle, Coelho will return to Collected Works (202 Galisteo) to show off a trailer and clips from the upcoming documentary. Coelho, García and poet Anne Valley-Fox will be on hand—along with the film’s production team—to talk about their experiences. The event will take place Thursday, Jan. 12, starting at 6pm. Reel World: Local Love Local Love
There will be a screening party for the independent, made-in-New-Mexico romantic comedy 2 Years of Love on Friday, Jan. 13. The film, which was just released by MarVista Entertainment, will be shown in the John Lewis Theatre inside SBCC (1025 Broadway SE) starting at 6:30pm. The film centers on Samantha and John Grey, a happily married couple with some conflict on the way. Samantha is the modern-day “Dear Abby” of talk radio, advising couples on how to communicate. But when she begins to feel her biological clock ticking, Samantha has a hard time convincing her husband to start a family. The film is directed by Thadd Turner and written by Lenny Mesi. The New-Mexico-centric cast includes Kayla Ewell, Ryan Merriman, Sarah Minnich, Catherine Haun, Chris Ranney, Amy Baklini and Merritt C. Glover. Reel World: Classic Kimo Classic Kimo
KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) has a couple classic film series to choose from this weekend. On Friday, Jan. 13, you can get in on “H.G. Wells on Film.” At 6 and 8:30pm, the 1953 version of The War of the Worlds will screen. That’s followed on Friday, Jan. 20 (at 6 and 8:30pm) with the 1960 adaptation of The Time Machine. If you’re looking for something a little more down-to-Earth, there’s the “Hollywood Legends: Paul Newman” series. That gets underway Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 and 6pm and Sunday, Jan. 15, at 2pm with 1958’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Come back Saturday, Jan. 21 (2 and 6pm), and Sunday Jan. 22 (2pm) for 1967’s Cool Hand Luke. Close out your Newman fix with 1969’s Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid on Saturday, Jan. 28 (2 and 6pm) and Sunday, Jan. 29 (2pm).
