Reel World: The State Of Film The State Of Film

The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History is opening a brand-new exhibit titled Hollywood Southwest: New Mexico in Film and Television this weekend. Curated by Dr. Paul A. Hutton, professor of history at the University of New Mexico, the exhibit traces the history of the state as both a location and a subject. From Billy the Kid to “Breaking Bad,” our state has appeared in scores of film and television projects. The memorabilia-filled exhibit opens Feb. 25 and will run through Aug. 27. The grand public opening will take place this Saturday from 1 to 3pm. Dr. Hutton himself will open the exhibit with a lecture on the history of filmmaking in New Mexico. Get there early, because seating is limited. Future events related to the exhibit include a panel discussion on the role of women in film (March 16), a look at the cinematic legacy of the Wild West (April 20), a local indie film night (May 18), a “Trollywood” tour (April 29) and more. For additional info on the exhibit, go to http://bit.ly/2kX86bk. The Albuquerque Museum is located at 2000 Mountain NW.

Reel World: No Kids Matinee No Kids Matinee

Barbara Bentree’s documentary My Choice explores the statistic that the rate of women who are childless by choice has risen by 100 percent over the past 45 years. The film gets behind the numbers by talking to five women, ranging in age from mid-40’s to mid-60’s, about why they made the choice not to have children. Bentree’s aim is to provide “an important forum for discussing the many questions and consequences of creating a life without children.” There will be a special screening of the film, followed by a panel discussion, on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 4:30 to 6:30pm at Center Stage in Santa Fe (505 Camino de los Marquez). Admission is $10.

Reel World: Bow And Arrow Bow And Arrow

Bowhunting is the subject of the Full Draw Film Tour, hitting Albuquerque’s South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway SE) this Saturday, Feb. 25, starting at 5:30pm. The New Mexico-lensed hunting and outdoor survival show “Beyond Rubicon” (airing Wednesdays on Sportsman Channel) is teaming up with local chapters of conservation groups to present this annual hunt-film festival. The aim of the festival (see what I did there?) is to promote “conservation-minded, fair-chase hunting films filled with awesome stories and breathtaking cinematography.” Films include “Chasing Ridgelines,” “Mile Marker Zero,” “Beyond the Roar,” “Big Sky” and more. Discounted tickets are available at Sportsman’s Warehouse (1450 Renaissance NE), The Archery Shoppe (2910 Carlisle NE), and Hit or Miss Archery Center (2801 Broadbent Park NE) for $15. Tickets will be $20 at the door. For more info go to http://bit.ly/2mjHz8Z.
