The National Hispanic Cultural Center gets into the holiday spirit with a screening of the Cuban horror comedy Juan of the Dead. The 2011 film tells the story of fortysomething slacker Juan, who ekes out a living in Havana with the occasional fishing expedition. But when a zombie apocalypse hits the island, Juan and his pals decide to start a zombie extermination service—despite the fact that the media is labeling the living dead ordinary dissidents revolting against the government. The film will screen Thursday, Oct. 26 starting at 7pm. It is being presented in Spanish with English subtitles. Tickets are free to the public and can be picked up at the Wells Fargo Auditorium box office (1701 Fourth Street SW) one hour prior to showtime.
Reel World: Freaks Feast Freaks Feast
If you’ve ever seen Tod Browning’s infamous 1932 horrorshow Freaks, you no doubt remember the film’s iconic “banquet” scene, in which the titular sideshow performers welcome a comely (but duplicitous) trapeze artist to their ranks with the drunken chant “One of us! One of us! One of us!” Now you can recreate that indelible scene with the help of Guild Cinema and Kelly’s Brew Pub. This coming Sunday, Oct 29, at 6:45pm you can head to Nob Hill for the “dinner and a Halloween movie” special. Plunk down $40 and you’ll start the evening with five beer tastings and and a five-course meal at Kelly’s (3222 Central Ave. SE). Pairings include such delights as an ahi tuna and honeydew ceviche with Kelly’s Session IPA. After dinner head across the street to Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE) for a screening of Tod Browning’s cult film starting at 8:45pm. Reel World: Monster Movies Monster Movies
The Historic Kimo Theatre (423 Central Ave. SW) is spending Halloween weekend saluting legendary horror movie star Boris Karloff. The three-day tribute starts on Friday, Oct. 27 with Universal’s 1931 adaptation of Frankenstein starring Karloff as Dr. Frankenstein’s (at the time) shocking creation. The film will screen at 6 and 8:30pm. On Saturday, Oct. 28, Karloff stars as another famous Universal monster in 1932’s The Mummy. That screens at 2 and 6pm. The weekend closes out on Sunday, Oct. 29 with 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein, in which Karloff’s monster is paired with Elsa Lanchester’s fright-wigged Bride. That can be seen at 2pm. All three of these films are free and open to the public. KiMo is also hosting its annual Haunted Theatre Tour on Saturday at 4 and 5pm. Unfortunately, those limited tickets sold out early—like they do every year.
