The Borderlands Film Festival is dedicated to “developing, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino culture by presenting a variety of programming from all over the world.” This year’s fest takes place Oct. 2 through 7 in Las Cruces and surrounding locations. Programmers are currently looking for shorts and features, with special categories set aside for animation, student films and music videos. This year a salute to our nation’s military has been added in the form of the “US Military” film category. Veterans are encouraged to submit films, both short and feature, and submission fees are waived for anyone who has served in the military. April 15 is the regular deadine to submit. Reel World: The Art Of Movies The Art Of Movies

Ready Player One, the ’80s video game obsessed movie directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the book by Ernest Cline, opens in theaters nationwide this Thursday, March 29. The Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe (418 Montezuma) is hosting a special screening/art show that evening featuring the work of Stephan Martiniere. Martiniere has worked on numerous animated TV series and films, including “Inspector Gadget,” “MASK,” “The Real Ghostbusters,” Titan A.E. and Guardians of the Galaxy. Martiniere was a concept artist on Ready Player One, designing some of the film’s retro-tastic architectural details. During his time working on the film, he created over 50 paintings and drawings. A number of these art pieces are on display at the Jean Cocteau’s lobby gallery starting at 5:30pm. Ready Player One screens that night starting at 7:30pm. The National Hispanic Cultural Center pays tribute to labor organizer César Chávez with a free documentary screening on Thursday, March 29. The Fight in the Fields: César Chávez and the Farmworkers’ Struggle recounts the history of the charismatic Chávez and his co-founder Dolores Huerta, who inspired a nonviolent movement, confronted conservative politicians and eventually formed the United Farmworkers Union. Archival footage as well as present-day interviews with Ethel Kennedy, Jerry Brown, Dolores Huerta and members of Chávez’ family form the backbone of this film, the first to cover the full arc of Chávez’ life. Admission is free. Show starts at 7pm. Tickets can be picked up one hour before showtime at the Bank of America Theatre box office (1701 Fourth Street NW).
