Attention, filmmakers. This Saturday, June 16, is the final deadline to submit your work to the 2018 Gallup Film Festival. Awards are handed out in dozens of categories—from Best Documentary Feature to Best Music Video to Best Short Comedy. Entry fees are $40 per film and can be submitted through filmfreeway.com. The event takes place September 13 through 15 at the historic El Morro Theatre in Gallup. For more info go to gallupfilmfestival.com.
Film critic, author and filmmaker (not to mention occasional Alibi contributor) Ben Radford will be introducing a special 25th anniversary screening of Joel Schumacher’s controversial 1993 film Falling Down on Saturday, June 16. Michael Douglas stars in this blackly comic cult film about a tie-wearing “everyman” whose workaday world goes from bad to worse when he finds himself on a violent trek across contemporary Los Angeles. Equal parts Taxi Driver, The Odyssey and Rush Limbaugh, Falling Down remains a hallmark of modern-day cis-het-white guy rage. The event, taking place at Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE), will also include a special display of Falling Down memorabilia. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased, in advance, by going to eventbrite.com.
Speaking of Gallup, eager film lovers can head out there this weekend to witness the fruits of the 66 Hour Digital Shootout short filmmaking competition. Between June 8 and 11, teams of filmakers were given a genre, a prop and a line of dialogue. They had just 66 hours to write, cast, shoot and edit their mini-masterpieces. Those films will now screen on Sunday, June 18 starting at 5pm at the El Morro Theatre (207 W. Coal Ave.) For more info go to gallupfilm.org.
Local dancer/actor/filmmaker Holly Adams (“Nymphomania,” “Leather Kittens Gone Bad,” “The Man-App,” “Shadows of Waste”) has teamed up with the New Mexico Film Foundation to host a staged reading of her new film screenplay No Place. Professional local actors have been brought on board to perform a live, “sneak preview” version of what promises to be Adams’ first feature-length film. Adams says the film is “about finding home in the style of White Trash Buddhism.” Among the actors expected to perform are Hanna Cooper, Adam Burch, Chris Ranney, Chad Brummett, Russell Maynor, Jenette Isaacson, Angela Wilson and more. The reading takes place at Sol Acting Academy (5500 San Mateo Blvd. NE) from 6 to 8pm.
Looking for a place to lose your kids this summer? Albuquerque’s Sol Acting Academy is hosting a Summer Break Make-A-Movie Camp with Jason Weiler. The camps are aimed at kids, ages 6 to 16. Camp sessions run June 18 through 22 and June 25 through 29 from 9am to 3pm. During the two sessions, young actors learn to write, produce, direct and act in their very own digital movies. Each session ends with a red carpet premiere of the completed movie for friends and family. Cost is $300 per student. Other film camps during the summer include Film Acting For Youth Camp, Teen Actors Lab, Disney Drama Summer Camp, and Music Video Camp. Sol Acting is located at 5500 San Mateo Blvd. NE.
