Burque Revolt is the latest slam group to take shape in the Duke City. The small nonprofit is built around principles of amplifying the voices of women, people of color, LGBTQ people and the million ways those identities can intersect. The undercurrent of that is, of course, that poetry and the spoken word is the perfect way to honor and rally around these voices. On Small Business Saturday (Nov. 24, more on that next) the group convenes at Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW) for a slam featuring Mercedez Holtry, Reina Davis, Dnessa Mcdaniel and Sophia Nuanez. The performance starts at 5pm and is free to attend.

Which means a whole lot of holiday markets are going to start cropping up, every weekend until 2019, practically. This Saturday, Nov. 24, is Small Business Saturday, an event that shifts consumer focus from shopping at major retailers, and redirects that traffic to small, local businesses, so all that money that inevitably gets spent each winter is kept in the community. Consider stopping at the Helix Holiday Market at Helix Coffee and Yoga (3612 Campus Blvd. NE) this Saturday from 9am to 3pm, where 22 vendors will be on hand, several food trucks, as well as Helix’ awesome menu of drinks. This event also marks their last day of business. If you’re closer to Downtown, maybe you’ll find the time to stop in at The Octopus and the Fox (514 Central Ave. SE) at their Boycott Black Friday event from 11am to 8pm. Pick up some unique gifts made by creative locals and enjoy drinks and snacks from 5 to 8pm.

The Nutcracker returns again to Popejoy.

Oh yes, you know it is nearing December when The Nutcracker Ballet returns to Popejoy Hall (203 Cornell Dr. NE). The ballet, produced by New Mexico Ballet Company with live musical support from the New Mexico Philharmonic, opens on Saturday, Nov. 24. A few dancers from the New York City Ballet will also bring their talents to the timeless story of Clara, her weird uncle and of course, the nutcracker. What a crazy story. Tickets usually sell out, so get them while you can. The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 2, tickets are live now at newmexicoballetcompany.com.
Found Objects From Hands And Hearts
Local calligrapher Ashley Rose Turner will be teaching a short series of handlettering classes for the holidays on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 6pm (and later, on Sunday, Dec. 2 at noon) at Nob Hill Bar & Grill (3128 Central Ave. SE). The class will be geared toward applying these skills to making holiday tags and decorating ornaments, but certainly the skills you take away can be applied to all sorts of future projects.
