Thursday 17

“A Discovery of Witches” (Sundance Now streaming anytime) Originally aired on England’s Sky One, this historical fantasy is based on the novel by Deborah Harkness. Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) plays a witch/historian who falls for a vampire/scientist (Matthew Goode, Watchmen) and unearths a literary mystery that “threatens to upend the careful order enforced by all magical beings and creatures.”

Friday 18

“Butterfly” (Hulu streaming anytime) Hulu snaps up this British family drama about separated parents who disagree on how to raise their youngest child, who was born a boy but identifies as a girl. Anna Friel (“Pushing Daisies”) stars.

“Carmen Sandiego” (Netflix streaming anytime) Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) stars in this animated continuation of the old Broderbund educational video game series/PBS game show from the late ’80s/early ’90s.

Saturday 19

Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (Lifetime 6pm) Nellie Bly was a turn-of-the-century badass. The Pittsburg-born journalist was most famous for engaging in a record-breaking round-the-world trip, circa 1888 (she made it in 72 days, beating Phileas Fogg’s fictional accomplishment). Before that, though, she went undercover to expose conditions in New York’s Women’s Lunatic Asylum. Here, Christina Ricci stars as the pioneering investigative journalist.

Saturday Night Fever: The Ultimate Disco Movie (Reelz 7pm) I mean, it’s hard to argue. Bruno Tonioli of “Dancing With the Stars” explores the making of 1977’s musical phenomenon.

Sunday 20

“Mark of a Killer” (Oxygen 8pm) Oxygen gets into the true crime game with this doc-series about the curious habits of serial killers. Just like England is running out of royalty to make TV shows about, America is running out of serial killers to make TV shows about.

Monday 21

Bixler High Private Eye (Nickelodeon 5pm) A teenage detective (Jace Norman from “Henry Danger”) shows up at a new school and starts the search for his missing father with the help of the school newspaper’s ace journalist (Ariel Martin, aka social media star “Baby Ariel”).

“Dating #NoFilter” (E! 8:30pm) Comedians offer jokey “play-by-play” commentary during this “fresh and hilariously honest take on the modern dating scene for the socially savvy, right-swiping generation.” … “Social media” stars and shows with hashtags in the title. See, kids: TV is just like your smartphone!

Tuesday 22

“Many Sides of Jane—Who Am I?” (A&E 8:01pm) Jane Hart is a 28-year-old mother of two who was recently diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously known as “multiple personalities”). In 21st century America, the best treatment for that is to get your own reality show.

Wednesday 23

“Knight Fight” (History 8:01pm) As far as ridiculous reality show competitions go, this “medieval MMA” show sounds pretty awesome. The full-contact Armored Combat League lets modern-day warriors suit up in authentic ancient armor and wield real steal weapons in order to pound on one another in the arena. Each episode features a different set of “era-specific” getups. Tonight’s premiere features Vikings vs. Byzantines.
