New Mexico PBS presents a special screening of the musical documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World on Friday, Jan. 18 at the KiMo Theatre (423 Central Ave. NW). The film, which won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Masterful Storytelling (wow, that’s an impressive mouthful), spotlights the role of Native Americans in popular music history. Among those profiled are music icons Link Wray, Jimi Hendrix, Charley Patton, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Randy Castillo and Robbie Roberston. Interviews include Tony Bennett, Buddy Guy, Steven Van Zandt, Taj Mahal, Ivan Neville, Martin Scorsese, George Clinton, Jackson Brown, Iggy Pop and others. Doors at the KiMo open at 6pm. The evening kicks off at 6:30pm with a special performance by local Navajo/Laguna “desert surf” band the Nizhóní Girls. The film starts at 7pm. Admission is free and open to the public. If you can’t make it to the KiMo screening, KNME-5 will air the film Monday, Jan. 21 starting at 8pm.
Reel World: Spy Vs. Spy Spy Vs. Spy
Movies in the Mountains at the Tijeras Public Library returns on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2pm. This month’s feature is the 1965 John Le Carré adaptation The Spy Who Came In From the Cold. The film stars Richard Burton as a British agent posing as a defector to East Germany while sowing disinformation about a powerful Soviet intelligence officer. This gritty depiction of spy work was quite different from the fantastical James Bond films of the era and ended up being nominated for a number of awards, including the Best Actor Oscar. Admission is free. The East Mountain Public Library is located at 487 NM-333 in Tijeras.
Reel World: Experimenting With Shorts Experimenting With Shorts
Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE) plays host to a new local shorts showcase this Saturday, Jan. 19, starting at 10:30pm. Organized by Longbox Productions, this event features the premiere of their latest film, “The Witness.” Directed by Anthonee Smith, the film is an experimental, noir-tinged detective story about the search for a very missing girl. Also included in the night’s screening are the films “Walk,” “Apothecary’s Cage,” The Lonely earth,” “Heineken” and “reality check.” All in all, it’s a mix of experimental, apocalyptic, gothic sci-fi and mystery. Tickets are $8 at the door.
Reel World: Submit To The Film Office Submit To The Film Office
The New Mexico Film Office started taking submissions for its annual New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase on Jan. 7. This yearly juried competition is open to New Mexico residents only and there is no fee to enter. Local film and video artists have until March 22 to fill out the paperwork and send in their work. Films must be 30 minutes or less in length. The Showcase culminates in an Awards Ceremony on May 10 at the KiMo Theatre. Awards are handed out to Best in Category, Best in Show, Audience Prize and Wild Card winners. The winning films screen immediately after the awards ceremony and will be spotlighted in a statewide tour taking place throughout the year. Categories for submission include Comedy, Drama, Documentary, Horror, Music Video, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Student.
