Dan Savage’s HUMP! Film Festival returns to Albuquerque on its 2019 tour. The sex-positive short film fest has been bringing audiences “a new kind of porn” since 2005 and will hit Albuquerque’s Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE) Thursday, Jan. 31 through Saturday, Feb. 2. Every year Savage—a nationally syndicated advice columnist, author, journalist and LGBT community activist—asks sex-loving amateurs to create their own kinky, sexy, funny, creative films spotlighting a cornucopia of body types, shapes, ages, colors, sexualities, genders and fetishes. All films are five minutes or less. This year’s tour is spreading the love to more than 50 cities across the US and Canada. All seats are $18 in advance or $20 at the door. To see a full lineup of shorts or to purchase tickets, go to humpfilmfest.com. You must be 18 or over to attend.

Reel World: Acting! Acting!

The New Mexico Film Foundation kicks off its 2019 Tale Writers script writing series Feb. 2 and 3 with “Acting 101 For Screenwriters.” This two-day workshop takes place from 9am to 4pm at the American Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe (83 Avan Nu Po). This introductory class is intended to familiarize writers with the art of acting. Exercises in character, dialogue, improvisation and more will—hopefully—make writers better able to communicate with the people who will be bringing their characters to life. SAG/AFTRA actress and former script judge Suzanne Birrell is teaching the class. Workshops are $75 each. For more information about this and future Tale Writers workshops (which continue through May 19), go to talewriters.org/script-programs/screenwriting-workshops.

Reel World: Groundhog Day? Again? Groundhog Day? Again?

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation, in partnership with the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience, hosts a special screening of the 1993 Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day on—appropriately enough—Saturday, Feb. 2 (that’s Groundhog Day, don’t you know). The film shows on the museum’s big DynaTheater screen starting at 7pm. Tickets are $10 general admission or $7.50 for Museum Foundation Members or AFME Sponsors. To reserve them in advance, go to naturalhistoryfoundation.org/afmx-movie-series. The NMMNH is located at 1801 Mountain Road NW.

Reel World: An American In Saigon An American In Saigon

As part of the annual Books to the Big Screen event (getting started, in earnest, next Thursday at the KiMo Theatre), the Public Library ABQ-BernCo and Friends of the Public Library are kicking it off with a screening of the 1958 film The Quiet American. Based on Graham Greene’s best-selling political thriller, the film stars Audie Murphy as an innocent American economist caught between the Communists and the colonialists in mid-century Vietnam. The screening takes place at 2:30pm on Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Main Library (501 Copper Ave. NW). Admission is free and open to the public.
