Appreciate the folkloric Spanish art form known as flamenco, but don’t fully grasp the history and culture behind it all? Yjastros 34: The Rise of Flamenco is the official title of this year’s annual collaboration between the National Institute of Flamenco, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the University of New Mexico. The two-day festival (March 15 and 16) aims to “trace the lineage of flamenco, beginning with early Spanish dance and music, such as fandangos, jácara and toná, taking the audience on a journey through the music and gestures of modern flamenco.” Among the internationally acclaimed guest artists lined up for this year’s festival include dancers/choreographers Daniel Doña (Granada, Spain) and Cristian Martin (Ávila, Spain) and the orchestra of New Spain (Dallas, Texas). The Sid Cutter Pilots Pavilion at Balloon Fiesta Park (4900 Fiesta Parkway NE) is the setting for the Albuquerque Antiquarian Book Fair 2019. Booksellers from six Western states will gather there this weekend to exhibit rare books, historic maps, old photographs, collectable postcards, first edition novels, vintage newspapers and art prints. So if you’re on the hunt for a signed first edition of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking or just love the smell of old books that results from the breakdown of glue, paper and ink, the Antiquarian Book Fair sounds like the place for the bibliophile in you. Don’t know if you’ve heard or not, but adult coloring books are kind of a thing these days. If you’re looking to exercise your artsy/crafty side with a bunch of like-minded strangers, Empire Board Game Library in Nob Hill (3503 Central Ave. NE) is hosting Enchanted Coloring and Crafts this Tuesday, March 19, from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Guests are invited to create distinctive and personal greeting cards at this “different adult coloring event.” Not into coloring books? Feel free to bring knitting, needlepoint, embroidery, quilting, crocheting, “everything except major woodworking.” The companionship and crafting take place every third Tuesday of every month at Empire Board Game Library. Found Objects Poet’s Problem
The Tortuga Gallery Spring 2019 Open Poetry Reading Series continues Wednesday, March 20 from 7 to 9pm. Hosted by Holly Wilson, this is a great opportunity for local poets to “share their words in the inspiring atmosphere of the Tortuga Gallery.” Poets are also invited to display their books on the Poet’s Table. If you’re interested in reading some of your own work, you need to be there to sign up by 6:30pm. Refreshments will be available at the Coffee House.
