Appreciate the folkloric Spanish art form known as flamenco, but don’t fully grasp the history and culture behind it all? Yjastros 34: The Rise of Flamenco is the official title of this year’s annual collaboration between the National Institute of Flamenco, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the University of New Mexico. The two-day festival (March 15 and 16) aims to “trace the lineage of flamenco, beginning with early Spanish dance and music, such as fandangos, jácara and toná, taking the audience on a journey through the music and gestures of modern flamenco.” Among the internationally acclaimed guest artists lined up for this year’s festival include dancers/choreographers Daniel Doña (Granada, Spain) and Cristian Martin (Ávila, Spain) and the orchestra of New Spain (Dallas, Texas). Tickets for the performances (8pm each night) run $30, $40, and $60 with $5 discounts for students, seniors and NHCC members. For more details and ticket info, go to nhccnm.org. Please note that the event has moved from the National Hispanic Cultural Center to UNM’s Carlisle Gymnasium (located on UNM’s Central Campus).
