In All I Ever Had of You Were Shadows, Michael Ellis explores through multiple media the death of his uncle, whose childhood sexual molestation and murder along the Mississippi River in 1972 still haunts the history of his family. The Southwest University of Visual Arts (5000 Marble Ave. NE) will host an opening reception for All I Ever Had of You Were Shadows on Thursday, May 9 from 6pm to 8pm. Depth, achieved through laying, often renders a visually darker surface, but as Angela Berkson says about her new paintings, “The resulting paintings may seem dark but look more closely. The underlayment of metallic pigment helps to light the paintings from within, making the darkness even darker in a way. All that glitters is not gold; the surface does not represent the truth.” So, as we wind on down the road, Exhibit/208 (208 Broadway Blvd. NW) will host an open reception for Sum of All, 20 paintings on the theme by Angela Berkson on Friday, May 10 from 5pm to 8pm. Found Objects Running Out Of Doors
Let’s just think for a moment about where we are and what we are doing. In Albuquerque’s open space, a group of artists have taken this moment to ask visitors to consider the ecology of the Rio Grande Valley through sculpture. Out of Doors: Acts of Ecology in Albuquerque is the first exhibit of Art Park 21, a new series of outdoor sculptures on the land of Open Space Visitor Center, Los Poblanos Fields and the Pueblo Montano picnic area. Art Park 21 begins with an opening reception on Saturday, May 11 from 2pm to 4pm at Open Space Visitor Center (6500 Coors Blvd. NW). This event is free and open to the public.
