Quench your terrible thirst this weekend at the H2O Water Festival and Symposium, the first edition of an annual event presented jointly by Santa Fe's Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) and the Earth Works Institute. The event combines film, education and community arts into a three-day extravaganza designed to highlight issues related to everyone's favorite chemical compound.

Over 50 nonprofit, municipal and local business entities will be participating. Fourteen water-related films will be screened at the CCA's Cinematheque Theater (1030 Old Pecos Trail). There'll also be workshops, exhibition booths, entertainment, plenty of food and outdoor water-related art projects for kids and adults alike.

The festival takes place from June 10 through June 12 at various venues around Santa Fe. Capping off the entire shindig will be a keynote presentation by Robert Kennedy, Jr.—the renowned environmental attorney, author and river activist—on Sunday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lensic Performing Arts Center.

Culture Shock

Having a roof over our head at night is a privilege most of us take for granted. Not so, the artists of ArtStreet, a community-based program of Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless.

Artstreet gives homeless and transitional artists along with other members of the community free opportunities to express themselves through art. The project is currently presenting an exhibit called Shelter from Shadows at the Albuquerque Mental Health Housing Coalition (1215 Fourth NW). The show features art designed to explore social, spiritual and metaphorical ideas associated with shelter and housing.

A reception will be held on Friday, June 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. If you can't make it then, the exhibit runs through August 5, but call ahead for a viewing schedule. 255-3643.

The Downtown Contemporary Art Center (105 Fourth SW) will host a solo exhibit of abstract paintings by Tobias. The show opens Friday, June 10, with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Be there or be a tiny, carefully placed splotch floating terrified and alone in a sea of raging color. Runs through July 8. 242-1983.
