Writer-director Zack Snyder (Justice League, Man of Steel, Watchmen, 300, Dawn of the Dead) is working on his first post-DC Cinematic Universe film. Army of the Dead—though not exactly a sequel to Dawn of the Dead—is described as a horror action film centering on a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas and a group of mercenaries who band together to pull off a major heist during the chaos. The film, which stars wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049), is scheduled to shoot in New Mexico later on this summer. Producers are looking for a ton of Albuquerque-based extras and are holding an open casting call this Saturday, June 22, from 9am to 1pm at the Johnny Tapia/Wells Park Community Center (500 Mountain Road NW). Latham Casting is looking for a diverse group of men and women to work as background extras beginning mid-July. The film requires a lot of zombies, of course. “Skinny, slight, scrawny, wiry, gaunt, lean, muscular body types” and “amputees” are asked to apply. The film also needs military types, so those with “military or law enforcement experience” are also encouraged to show up. Reel World: Sky’s The Limit Sky’s The Limit
The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History presents another installment of “Movies Under the Wings” on Saturday, June 22. This amazing outdoor event features the high-flying, science-based drama October Sky. It’s a 1999 biopic based on the memoir by NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam Jr., and it relates Hickam’s childhood dream to become a rocket scientist in the wake of the historic Sputnik launch. Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper and Laura Dern are among the cast. The film screens outside, under the airplanes in the Museum’s Heritage Park. Doors open at 7:30pm and the movie begins at dusk. Local food trucks will be on hand and the Bombs Away Beer Company will be pouring suds. Feel free to bring a portable outdoor chair. No alcohol, pets, smoking accessories or firearms are allowed. The film screening is included with museum admission of $10 for adults, $8 for youth, seniors and veterans, and $7 for active military. The South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway Blvd. SE) presents a bilingual double feature on Thursday, June 20. At 10am there’s a screening of Los Incredibles 2. (Yup, that’s The Incredibles 2 in Spanish.) That’s followed by—what else?—The Incredibles 2! (Yup, that’s Los Incredibles 2 in English.) Feel free to watch one or both of these Pixar animated superhero flicks. Double-featured Spanish/English films continue on Thursday mornings throughout the summer.
