The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (1801 Mountain Rd. NW) celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing this Saturday, July 20, with a screening of the Smithsonian Channel documentary “The Day We Walked on the Moon.” The program uses spectacular historical footage and interviews with key figures to tell the story of how mankind walked on the Moon. The film starts screening at 10am in the museum’s STEM Lecture Hall and runs continuously throughout the day. Admission to the screening is free with museum admission. Moon-related table activities for kids will also be available from 10am to 2pm.

Have you ever wondered about the people who work in the costume department on a motion picture, creating the exact worn/dirty/rumpled look on a piece of clothing to make it realistic. That’s the work of costume dyers and agers. For those curious about finding a job in New Mexico’s growing film industry, the New Mexico Film Office is offering up a special class/lecture on costume aging and dyeing on Saturday, July 20. Wynema Chavez Quintana and Amy Mann will be there to talk about what their job entails and how to get work in as a costume ager/dyer. If you have an excellent color sense, attention to detail, the ability to replicate processes and familiarity with fabrics and materials, this might be a cool career for you. The class takes place at the Central & Unser Library (8081 Central Ave. NW) from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1975 smash (based on Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel) taught audiences to fear the ocean and spawned a string of sequels. But there’s no beating the original starring Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss. Catch this big fish on the NMMNH’s massive DynaTheater screen this Saturday, July 20, starting at 7pm. The ABQ-BernCo Public Library’s Summer Reading Program Film Series comes to a close on Wednesday, July 24 with a screening of the 1983 Oscar winner The Right Stuff. Based on Tom Wolfe’s nonfiction novel of the same name, the film traces the early days of NASA’s Project Mercury, training astronauts for manned spaceflight. Ed Harris, Scott Glenn, Sam Shepard and Dennis Quaid star. The film ties in with this year’s Summer Reading Program theme of “A Universe of Stories” and is also has a timely connection to this weekend’s anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
