Youth Development Inc. is hosting a free public screening of the feature documentary No Small Matter this Thursday, Jan. 16 at 2:30pm and 5:30pm at KiMo Theatre (423 Central Ave. NW). This is the first major film to concentrate on the human capacity for early intelligence and the potential for quality early care and education to benefit America’s social and economic future. Rachel Giannini, an early childhood education expert and care provider featured in the film, is set to participate in an open discussion following the screenings. Reel World: To Havre And To Hold To Havre And To Hold
Movies in the Mountains returns this Saturday, Jan. 18 with Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s contemporary “fairy tale” about compassion, comradeship and the worldwide immigrant crisis, Le Havre. The 2011 dramedy concerns a young African boy who arrives by cargo ship in the port city of Le Havre, France. There, an aging shoeshine man takes pity on the child and welcomes him into his home. Presented by the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System, the American Vaudeville Museum Film Project and the Route 66 Alliance, the film screening takes place at 2pm at the East Mountain Public Library (487 NM-333 in Tijeras). Admission is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
Reel World: Raising Cane Raising Cane
The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture is screening the award-winning documentary Canes of Power on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 1pm. The screening takes place inside MIAC’s Kathryn O’Keefe Theatre (710 Camino Lejo in Santa Fe). The film, narrated by Cherokee actor Wes Studi, documents President Abraham Lincoln’s gift of engraved wood canes to each of New Mexico’s 19 Pueblo nations. The canes symbolized the recognition of tribal sovereignty at the same time 13 Southern states were seeking their own sovereignty in the form of secession. Following the film, a Q&A session with Dr. Matthew Martinez, deputy director of the museum and associate producer on Canes of Power, is scheduled. The screening is free with admission to MIAC ($7 for New Mexico residents, $12 for nonresidents).
Reel World: Women Who Rock Women Who Rock
Stone Age Climbing Gym presents the annual high-altitude women’s sports film festival No Man’s Land this Saturday, Jan. 18, at the KiMo Theatre (423 Central Ave. NW). The goal of the Carbondale, Colorado-based No Man’s Land Film Festival is to “un-define the feminine” in adventure, sports and film. This week’s touring sample of the annual festival offers up a string of short documentaries highlighting the passion, drive and skill of women in the worlds of climbing, skiing, running, surfing and more.
