Over 60 artists, celebrities and community leaders from around the country have been asked to transform simple wooden boxes into elaborate works of art. These boxes will be sold at a special celebrity art auction on Friday, July 8, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center to raise funds for the center’s foundation. There’ll be music by Jasper along with wine and tapas. Tickets are $25. To order, call 766-9858. You can preview the art as well as read about each artist at www.nhccnm.org. Sure, it’s a cliché, but some clichés bear repeating. There are very few places in the world that boast New Mexico’s pristine photographic light. PhotoArts Santa Fe, the massive annual 10-day photography festival, kicks off this week in our sister city. It’ll run July 8-17, and most events are free and open to the public. There’ll be lectures, demonstrations, exhibits and the popular PhotoMarket. On July 15, a connected event, PhotoArts ABQ, will bring photography-related events to galleries all over Albuquerque. A full schedule of events in both cities is available online at www.photoartssantafe.com.

Musical Theatre Southwest yanks back the curtain for a new staging of The Wiz, in which the familiar story of Dorothy and her irritating little dog get beefed up with some gospel, disco, soul and hopping rock 'n' roll. The show runs Fridays and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through July 24 at the Hiland Theatre. If you have a brain, a heart and a little bit of courage, you'll call 262-9305 and order your tickets to the merry old land of Oz. You can also buy them at www.ticketmaster.com.
